Janamsakhi Tradition: An Analytical Study by Dr. Kirpal Singh (Hardback)
Janamsakhis: Ageless Stories, Timeless Values by Harish Dhillon (Paperback)
Janamsakhis, as the name suggests, are stories that chronicle the life of Guru Nanak Dev in a sequential manner. The earliest known Janamsakhi, dating to 1658—over 120 years after Guru Nanak’s passing in 1539—reflects a tradition of evolving narratives. Over time, chroniclers modified and adapted these accounts to suit their era, leaving no single Janamsakhi as the definitive version.
In this volume, Dr. Harish Dhillon selects twenty of the most inspiring and captivating stories from Guru Nanak’s life. While written in a contemporary style, the narrative retains the timeless essence of the original Janamsakhis. The book aims to make the Guru’s life and teachings accessible to modern readers, highlighting his journeys (udasis) and his message of equality, love, and universal brotherhood.
This work not only informs but also inspires, making it a valuable resource for anyone interested in religious studies, Indian history, or gaining deeper insight into the life and legacy of Guru Nanak.
Janamsakhi Paintings of Guru Nanak in Early Sikh Art by Dr. Nikky-Guninder Kaur Singh (Hardback)
Janamsakhis are stories about the life of Guru Nanak (1469–1539). They have been circulating orally, in writing, and in paintings and illustrations. B40 is one such documented artistic expression held at the British Library in London. Its fifty-seven beautiful iconotexts narrate the life of the first Sikh Guru from his first day at school to his final moments. The talented artist Alam Chand Raj illustrates Guru Nanak’s sensuous feel for the all-inclusive Divine, his interior and exterior journeys, his manifold inter-faith conversations, his environmental aesthetics, and his marvelous actions. In the language of vibrant colours Guru Nanak’s transcendent materiality and world-affirming existentiality are exquisitely written out. The stylistic infusions of Punjabi art, Chaurapanchasika style and folk-art style of the Rajasthani Malwa School bring the historical Guru close to the viewer. Along with the artwork there is the rich text by Nikky-Guninder Kaur Singh explaining the stories from a twenty-first-century perspective. She insightfully explores the question – how are the Janamsakhis relevant to the political, societal, economic, and environmental state of the world at present.
