Synopsis
Synopsis
This pioneering reference charts the work of European silversmiths who set up workshops in the major colonial centres of Calcutta, Madras, Bombay, Lucknow and beyond between 1790 and 1860. Wilkinson documents their patrons, stylistic influences and, crucially, the maker’s marks that distinguish Anglo-Indian silver from both British and indigenous production.
The 171-page volume combines a concise historical survey with meticulously drawn and photographed hallmark plates, organised city-by-city and accompanied by biographical notes on more than 200 identified craftsmen. Issued in a strictly limited run of 1,000 hard-cover copies, it remains the standard tool for collectors, dealers, museum curators and scholars needing to authenticate or date colonial Indian silverware.
