Synopsis
Synopsis
Military strategy has been an essential aspect of warfare since ancient times, shaping both large and small battles. Effective strategies play a crucial role in securing victory. While the Mahabharata touches on this subject, its blend of mythology and history limits its reliability as a source for strategic study.
Between 300 B.C. and 300 A.D., central China was divided into nearly 30 warring states, leading to the rise of military strategists who advised rulers and commanders on the art of warfare. Among them, Sun Tzu authored The Art of War, a seminal treatise on battle strategy that continues to influence military and strategic thinking worldwide.
In 1772, French Jesuit P. Amiot translated The Art of War into French, followed by N. Conrad in Russian and Captain E.F. Calthrop in English. The book gained immense popularity among Western military leaders and, over time, found its place in management studies globally.
This work presents one of the first recorded instances of successful military strategy employed by an Indian general, dating back 300 years. Its study remains highly valuable for defense organizations and management institutes, offering detailed battle strategies and tactical insights for easy comprehension and practical application.
