We bring to you. In English, an excellent translation of the little known epic poem of Bhai Jaita (also known as Bhai Jivan Singh) from the 17"' century battle- fields of Punjab. A foreword by Professor Raj Kumar Hans constructs an informed and scholarly framework around the text, in terms of Sikh history, ideology and dalit Dynamics, then and now. An introduction by the translator speaks of the scholarship potential the Katha holds as a source text for historians, anthropologists, social scientists and researchers in religious and literary studies. In the larger context of Gurbani and Bhakti poetics, the Srl Gur Katha emerges as a text furnished by local and transnational poetic traditions which in turn were influenced by the dust-storms of religious confluence and conflict. Of this, the Katha text is both an expression and an extension; as on the one hand it subsumes and shifts stylistic and substantial boundaries and, on the other, culls new strategies and dynamics into the poetics of mystic and militant verse writings in Punjabi.

You can check out my book review on this book, here.

Specifications

- Hardback
- ISBN: 81-7205-543-9
- Edition(s): Aug-2015 1st
- Pages: 143

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0512/0570/1796/files/bhai-jaitas-sri-gur-katha-by-neeti-singh-3644729.jpg?v=1756601045
history-of-the-punjab-the-rise-progress-present-condition-of-the-sect-nation-of-the-sikhs-by-henry-thoby-prinsep
History of the Punjab, & the Rise, Progress, & Present Condition of the Sect & Nation of the Sikhs by Henry Thoby Prinsep

History of the Punjab, & the Rise, Progress, & Present Condition of the Sect & Nation of the Sikhs by Henry Thoby Prinsep is a Sikh history book. We learn how Gobind Singh, the tenth and last Guru, welded the Sikhs into a brotherhood, with each man bearing the surname Singh, or "Lion," and abiding by a distinctive code of dress and conduct. He tells of Banda the Brave’s daring conquests, which sowed the seeds of a Sikh state, and how the enlightened ruler Ranjit Singh fulfilled this promise by founding a Sikh empire.

The author examines how, through the centuries, the Sikh soldier became an exemplar of discipline and courage and explains how Sikhs — now numbering nearly 20 million worldwide — have come to be known for their commitment to education, their business acumen, and their enterprising spirit.

Finally, Singh concludes that it would be a grave error to alienate an energetic and vital community like the Sikhs if modern India is to realize its full potential. The spectrum of this genre of literature has several strands. It elucidates mystic concepts of spiritual elevation, provides the earliest exegesis of the hymns of Guru Nanak; and illustrates the teachings of Guru Nanak by narrating interesting anecdotes. The most significant aspect of the Janamsakhi literature is that it has preserved the tradition of Guru Nanak’s life that become the primary source of information for all the writings on Guru Nanak. Of late the historical validity of this material has been called to question in the name of methodology. The author analyses the Janamsakhi material extensively and deciphers the historical contents in this tradition. The most significant metaphysical issues viz., human existence, problem of evil, immortality of soul and man’s voyage from transmigration to emancipation are vividly explained. The Sikh metaphysics is not an abstract unity but it integrates the spiritual and temporal aspects. They have been circulating orally, in writing, and in paintings and illustrations. B40 is one such documented artistic expression held at the British Library in London. Its fifty-seven beautiful iconotexts narrate the life of the first Sikh Guru from his first day at school to his final moments. The talented artist Alam Chand Raj illustrates Guru Nanak’s sensuous feel for the all-inclusive Divine, his interior and exterior journeys, his manifold inter-faith conversations, his environmental aesthetics, and his marvelous actions. In the language of vibrant colours Guru Nanak’s transcendent materiality and world-affirming existentiality are exquisitely written out. The stylistic infusions of Punjabi art, Chaurapanchasika style and folk-art style of the Rajasthani Malwa School bring the historical Guru close to the viewer. Along with the artwork there is the rich text by Nikky-Guninder Kaur Singh explaining the stories from a twenty-first-century perspective. I then decided to set upon the monumental task of compiling the numerous sources and commentaries into one translation whilst attempting to not lose the original definitions. This is not completely impossible due to the metaphysical definitions being difficult to translate into English without the appropriate words within the vocabulary. This task was started as a labour of love back in 2004 and has taken a total of eighteen years to complete. This is not just due to the difficulty in trying to convey the message of the Gurū but due to the constant learning I had to undertake and endure. I felt that through the grace of the Gurū I learned so much about the concepts of Sikhī which I had been ignorant towards. I have written this book in an attempt to show the world the depth of philosophy within the Sikh faith.

This commentary is to be used to bring this knowledge to the general public. This prayer is the greatest jewel in the scriptural writings of the Gurūs and there have been so many commentaries on this text that the terms and interpretations seem endless. Like most works, there may be some controversies on different parts of the texts and where mantrās commence and end. This fact is brought into sharp focus when we consider the Guru's life and legacy simultaneously in the contexts of the Mughal Empire, its feudatory states in the hills, and the Sikh movement. The creation of the Khalsa in 1699 as a political community with the aspiration to rule made conciliation or compromise with the Mughal state almost impossible. Their long struggle ended eventually in the declaration of Khalsa Raj in 1765.

Using contemporary and near contemporary sources in Gurmukhi, Persian, and English, J.S.
